Regulated gambling is serving benefits to multiple parties

Gambling is gaining popularity among the masses, and there is no denying the fact that a major share goes to the rise of online gambling. Customers can now engage from the comfort of their homes using mobile devices or PCs. Benefits extend to more parties, such as the government and operators. For starters, the government can collect taxes from the operations of gambling platforms. Additionally, government and regulatory authorities can impose requisite consumer protection and oversight measures.

Needless to say, these are based on the fact that operators are registered or regulated by relevant authorities.

What gives the maximum taxes to the Government is the wide range of rates on services. These fall anywhere between 15% and 50%, depending on the state, country, or region along with authorities. The gambling market in the US fetched more than $35 billion in state and local taxes in 2021. The contribution by online gambling was $3.7 billion. Pennsylvania had topped the list by generating $372 million in direct gaming taxes plus $260 million in online sports bettings.

Regulatory oversight has been a concern since offshore platforms were found exploiting their users. This could be due to over-commitment or enticing customers with

too-good-to-be-true promotions. Some of the best online casinos in the USA have been able to draw a line to serve customers efficiently. Hence, going through every step of the process to get themselves registered under prevailing regulations.

Another way for Government authorities to fetch revenue for the region is via license fees. This has to be renewed after 3 or 5 years, depending on the terms of the license agreement. Simply put, the license fee is another way for the Government to bank regular income for the state and the country. Some tools and techniques that authorities implement on regulated operators are random number generators, responsible gambling features, and cash reserves. Some jurisdictions have even set up a dedicated complaint process for players to register their issues. These could include underage gambling, unfair practices, and problem gambling.

The idea behind transitioning to a legalized gambling market is to ensure that unregulated operators are not able to exploit customers. Another perspective is to protect customers from issues including, but not limited to, data privacy, gambling addiction, and draining of funds. Illegal operators also take away the scope for the Government to accumulate taxes for the development of a region and its residents.

States in the US where online gambling has been legalized are Delaware, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Nevada, and West Virginia.

There is a possibility that more states in the US may soon legalize the operations. The two-fold objectives are to meet the demands of residents and generate revenue for the state. Residents are often found driving to another state just to engage in gambling or move to an unregulated online casino.
