College Football Lines & Picks: Kentucky tries to fight off payback bid by Louisville

Bluegrass State teams have a lot on the line this weekend, and for the Kentucky Wildcats, it’s a chance to demonstrate that their quick start out of the gate, which brought them a Top 10 ranking, wasn’t a fluke. And Will Levis may be looking to rehabilitate his draft status.

BetOnline patrons will wait to see if dual threat Malik Cunningham can make a post at QB for Louisville because that could be a difference-maker.

Western Kentucky is in action, too, as they throw the ball about a hundred times against Florida Atlantic.

Let’s take a look……

Louisville Cardinals at Kentucky Wildcats, 3 PM ET

College Football Betting Odds: Kentucky -3.5

Total: 42.5 Points

Rough memories for Louisville here, as Kentucky, won last year’s meeting 52-21 behind 511 yards of offense.

The big question is whether Louisville QB Malik Cunningham (1552 passing, 556 rushing) can make it to game time. His injured shoulder forced him to sit out against NC State last week. Coach Scott Satterfield is very confident Cunningham can give it a go. The nature of this game changes quite a bit if Brock Domann (a 51% passer) has to make a start.

It’s hard to tell how highly Kentucky QB Will Levis is being thought of by pro scouts right now. He began the season looking very much like a guy who would go in the first half of the first round. But he’s had injury problems and has thrown just five TD passes in his last five games. In their last seven outings, the ‘Cats have scored 16.3 ppg. There’s been a drop, naturally. At one juncture, the UK was 7th in the nation. But recently, they lost to Vanderbilt.

Still, although they were blitzed 44–0 by Tennessee, their defense, which is ranked third in the SEC, has kept other ranked teams in relative check. That includes top-ranked Georgia, who tallied only 16 points. And Kentucky is lucky to have a standout back in Chris Rodriguez Jr. (784 yards).

The Play: KENTUCKY -3.5

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Florida Atlantic Owls, Noon ET

College Football Lines at BetOnline: Western Kentucky -7

Total: 61 Points

Tyson Helton runs quite a prolific offense at WKU; this was the home of Bailey Zappe, who had his 15 minutes of fame with the Patriots this season and threw for 508 yards in last year’s meeting, a 52-17 Hilltopper win. Interesting, though; WKU had a string of five straight under before the 42-17 loss to Auburn (which was reportedly considering Helton for its head coaching gig).

Austin Reed is this year’s trigger man, with 3840 yards against FBS teams (third in the nation) with 33 touchdowns. The ‘Toppers still have a chance to gain a berth in the Conference USA title game. Meanwhile, there are rumors that FAU head man Willie Taggart will get his walking papers if his Owls don’t get bowl-eligible with a win here.

The Play: WESTERN KENTUCKY -7

Old Dominion Monarchs at South Alabama Jaguars, Noon ET

NCAA Football Odds: South Alabama -14.5

Total: 48 Points

South Alabama has not played a hugely tough schedule, but they showed up when they visited the Rose Bowl, losing by a single point to UCLA (32-31). That has proven not to be a fluke, and the Jaguars almost snuck into the rankings, which is monumental when you consider where this program was just a couple of years ago. So kudos to coach Kane Wommack.

Old Dominion has done some Jekyll-and-Hyde stuff; they beat Virginia Tech, took Virginia to the brink, and routed Coastal Carolina 49-21. After that, ODU lost five straight games and scored 57 points during that stretch.

The Play: SOUTH ALABAMA -14.5
