ACMA takes harsh steps against illegal gambling operators

Gambling is a form of entertainment that keeps players busy for hours. One factor that goes noticed is basic financial protection. Authorities being active in the sector, therefore, plays a major role. ACMA, for one, has come forward asking the internet service providers in Australia to block access to gambling websites that have been illegally operating in the region.

These websites, including Las Atlantis & Cloudbet, are majorly rooted in foreign soil. Thorough investigations were conducted by ACMA, short for Australian Communications & Media Authority, before taking the final call.

A total of 619 gambling sites have been blocked since the first request. Blocking is one of the best ways to protect Australians from illegal gambling operators.

In addition to the 619 gambling websites blocked, more than 180 operators have withdrawn their services since 2017, when ACMA started enforcing new rules for illegal offshore operators.

Consumers have been asked to take precautions even when a gambling website looks legitimate. The website’s interface does not guarantee its legality and the gambling website still holds the power to perform malpractices.

Even though many operators have seen a downfall after implementing the offshore gambling rules, some of the best crypto gambling sites continue to operate in the region. They follow all the rules to function under regulations laid down by relevant authorities. Gambling sites still exist in Australia, but only the ones that guarantee consumers fairness and protection.

By participating on a gambling site without checking for licenses, Australians risk losing their money to further encourage operators. A solution is to first check the register of ACMA and then move ahead with gambling participation. Consumers who come across an illegal site or offer questionable services can file a complaint with ACMA. One complaint filed will go a long way to protect more Australians.

Meanwhile, ACMA has drafted a document highlighting how Australians can keep themselves safe. According to the document, online services that are categorized as illegal in Australia are:-

  • Casino-style games
  • Slots
  • In-play sports betting
  • Scratchies
  • Unlicensed lottery & betting services

Illegal operators tend to poorly treat their customers and withhold their winnings. Many customers have also complained about operators shutting down their services without prior notice and moving to a different location.

In such a case, authorities cannot help, and customers lose their deposit and their winnings. Illegal gambling that is blocked becomes unavailable for access and sign-in.

Anonymous complaints can be filed with ACMA and the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission by seeking independent legal advice. Customers under the impression that the website is illegal will have to state the reason for their belief without sharing any personal data.

ACMA has kept its doors open for customers suffering from gambling problems.
