College Football Odds: Could once-mighty Miami fall even further?
The University of Miami Hurricanes has won five national titles and sent untold numbers of star players to the National Football League. Over the last 40 years, they have been one of the most decorated programs in the nation. But they are going through one of their worst periods in the last half-century, which is painful for the alumni to watch.
BetOnline patrons will watch them try not to embarrass themselves as they play the Pitt Panthers. And if they surprise everyone and win, we may even see them again.
Pittsburgh Panthers at Miami Hurricanes, 8 PM ET
College Football Betting Odds: Pittsburgh -6.5
Total: 43 Points (Over -105, Under -115)
I guess it would be bad manners to fire Mario Cristobal, who just made it back to Miami. Still, he may have been gone if it was anybody else. Cristobal will get some patience from Miami brass for many reasons, including the fact that he’s gained a reputation as an excellent recruiter. But what has begun in this program lately has been an embarrassment. Losing to Middle Tennessee, then by 24 points to Duke, then 45-3 to hated rival Florida State, then 40-10 to Clemson while compiling just 98 yards…. well, there you have it.
Even so, the Hurricanes can get to a bowl game if they win on their home turf. Things haven’t gone well this year for Tyler Van Duke, whose injuries have beset him, and the scheme that Cristobal and his staff have installed just doesn’t seem to be the right fit for him. We wonder if he’ll bolt for the NFL Draft and how much his stock has dropped. It’s been clear Miami doesn’t have much of a backup plan. Freshman quarterback Jacurri Brown has looked like a deer in headlights. And Pittsburgh is hyper-aggressive on the defensive end.
As Miami grapples with its issues and struggles to regain its former glory, other notable rivalries and crucial games continue to captivate sports fans. Showdowns at high noon include Michigan-Ohio State, which consistently draw massive attention and highlight the importance of strong performances in high-stakes situations.
The Play: PITTSBURGH -6.5
Washington Huskies at Washington State Cougars, 10:30 PM ET
Pac 12 Football Odds at BetOnline: Washington -2
Total: 60 Points
This year’s U-Dub squad is a lot different than last year’s, which managed just 200 yards in a 40-13 Wazzu win, which turned the Apple Cup into something ugly for them. That leads us to believe that if payback – in a big way – is available, Kalen DeBoer’s team will be grabbing at it.
And you know, they have the offensive horses to get it done. Michael Penix Jr. leads the nation in passing yards against FBS teams, and you know, he’s been sacked only five times. As a result, you are looking at something of an offensive juggernaut.
It’s too bad because they could have done better, losing only in donnybrooks against UCLA and Arizona State. But there is still the possibility that they can get to the Pac 12 title game.
The Play: WASHINGTON -2
BYU Cougars at Stanford Cardinal, 11 PM ET
NCAA Football Odds: BYU -6
Total 58 Points
Stanford has not made money for anyone but those who have faded them, as they have covered just two of their last 18 games. And one has to wonder how much the Cardinal has left in the tank after blowing an 11-point lead in losing to Cal in the “Big Game.” This team is notoriously weak upfront; only South Florida has allowed more yards per carry than their 6.1. And that is surprising for a team coached by David Shaw.
BYU has one of Shaw’s former troops ready to do some damage. Christopher Brooks was in the Big Game last year and had 131 yards on the ground. So yes, it would be ironic if he was the guy who broke Stanford’s back.
The Play: BYU -6
