New York witnessed him in action as he achieved his fourth US Open title. The final scoreboard tallied 6-3, 7-6, and 6-3 in his favor. It means the world to me, he said while interacting with the media. Following this came a moment where he quickly found his family members for an affectionate hug.
Interestingly, this was his 10th appearance in the US Open and first after 2018. He had a chance to appear in the previous edition; however, he let it slide by not getting vaccinated for COVID-19. The stats could have been different had he made a play previously.
Medvedev and Djokovic came face-to-face, with the winner wanting to avenge his loss at the US Open in 2021. Medvedev had beaten him in straight sets.
It is simply impossible to ignore a fight that Medvedev puts up. It was his third appearance in the last five years. Considering his age of just 27 years, he has a lot of tennis ahead of him where Djokovic may not be on the field.
The current event featured a second set that lasted 104 minutes and a Djokovic collapse. His team claimed it was due to exhaustion, which is understandable given the game’s relentless back-and-forth nature. Medvedev attempted to view this as a favorable opportunity. That gave him a 4-3 lead. However, Djokovic prevailed in the tiebreaker to overcome a 3-1 deficit.
Djokovic concluded the event with 19 winning games, while his opponent had to settle for 12 games that worked for him. The second set went to the extended version only to end with a lead of 2 points.
The previous record for winning Grand Slam titles was held by Serena Williams – 23. Djokovic has broken that record. Her record made it to the books after she surpassed Rafael Nadal, who has 22 titles to his name. Djokovic looked forward to playing in this event and winning the title. He had earlier said that winning the 24th Grand Slam title would mean a lot, as having 23 titles meant a lot.
