WPT Australia Returns with Record-Breaking Numbers

The tournament was held from 21 May to 31 May 2021, with more than 4,000 players playing in the AU$1,500 ($1,160) Main Event for ten events and 1,113 of them.

The first casino-based tournament series in Australia since the APL Million took place in March 2020 at The Star Gold Coast.

Record-Breaking Event

With 898 players playing in the main event at WPT National China in 2014, the WPT tournament at The Star Gold Coast surpassed the largest Asia-Pacific main event in WPT history.

The main event also had the highest pool prize of $1,502,550, surpassing WPT Australia 2019’s pool prize of $1,480,500.

The results are a promising sign for the future of Australian poker, according to Jessica Mellor.

Jessica Melor, COO of the Star Gold Coast, allegedly said to the media that the WPTDeepStacks “was overjoyed” with the results, smashing records in the Asian Pacific and providing tourists eleven days of the fantastic city- and world-class entertainment. She also noted that the findings are an excellent sign for Australian poker’s future and a boon for the tourist sector in Australia.

The Star Gold Coast proves it’s capable of meeting the demand of an avant-garde poker room, the suite of award-winning restaurants, five-star hotels, pubs, and of course, the beautiful weather and sea surroundings. She also said the Star and Gold Coast are looking forward to continuing their relationship with the WPT and bringing them other events.

Final Day

Will Davies of Sydney won the WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast main event, overcoming Aussie poker icon Joe Hachem to keep his seat at the table and then defeating Mike Maddocks to claim his first WPTDeepStack title.

The WPT recently cleared the air by confirming that it will have its first-ever WPT main tour stop in Australia later in October at The Star Gold Coast, but the dates have yet to be finalized.
