According to a piece of a trusted source of information, the deal also gives James the option to refuse his $35.6 million player option in 2023-24 and sign a new free agent contract the following summer.

The Philadelphia 76ers were able to sign free agents Danuel House and P.J. Tucker by using the middle level and semiannually exceptions. Harden has already expressed to Daryl Morey his desire to contribute greatly to strengthening the lineup and improving the team’s chances of contending for a champions league. Additionally, James refusing the $47.4 million player option might give the business more freedom to make offers once the upcoming season starts.

The franchise has high hopes for James. They believe that Harden will train harder and come back in greater physical shape than when he started playing in Brooklyn and Philadelphia last season as part of his dedication to winning.

In the last 65 games with the Nets and Sixers, Harden, who will ultimately turn 33 in the upcoming month, averaged nearly 22 points and 10.3 assists. In February, Brooklyn bartered him to Philadelphia as part of a historic agreement that saw Ben Simmons participate in the Nets. But the Sixers lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs for the 4th time in 5 years.

After his phenomenally successful 8-year run in Houston ended right at the start of the 2020–21 season, Harden was sent to Brooklyn for just one season before being traded to the Nets in exchange for a sizable package of players.

After the Nets’ second-round defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks two years ago, Harden’s relationship with the team began to deteriorate, which coincided with Irving’s lack of scoring in New York owing to the metro’s COVID-19 immunization requirement.

The former Rockets general manager Morey and Harden reconnected in Philadelphia, where they collaborated to find ways to keep Harden a Sixer under this new contract and strengthen the team’s roster this summer.
